Northrop had developed a rate gyro for aviation guidance systems.
However, the design was proving too expensive to be viable,
since many of its vital parts were being machined from stainless
steel. Part of the job of one of the company’s engineers was
to procure cost reductions. The print called for such tight
tolerances and TIR (total indicated run-out) that the engineer
realized he couldn’t just send out RFQs and expect to receive
effective responses. From past projects, this particular Northrop
engineer had learned that Quadra-Tek was the one molding partner
that continually solved impossible cost and design problems.
Working together we were able to mold a DAP material. It took
nearly a year to perfect this project and prove it would work.
Result: Quadra-Tek™ was able to save the company more
than $1 million during the first year of production.
