Textron Defense Systems (AVCO at the time) had been fabricating a battery holder from metal but wanted to design a plastic part in order to save money. However, the plastic had to retain the same qualities as the metal: thin but strong wall sections, chemical resistance and ease of assembly. Quadra-Tek’s engineers worked closely with the customer to make design concept changes to develop a two-way, cam action slide/one-cavity mold. We selected a polyphenylene sulfide material (Ryton) because of its strength, good flow for 40% glass-filled material and its heat and chemical resistance.

Results: At the time this product was developed, Quadra-Tek™ was one of eight suppliers for this division of Textron. Today it is one of two suppliers.
